SULU SULTANATE FLAGS AND SYMBOLS > SEALS AND SULTANS OF THE ROYAL SULTANATE OF SULU

CARVING AT THE TOP OF THE DOOR OF THE ISTANA ( PALACE ) OF HRH SULTAN MOHAMMAD JAMALUL ALAM OF SULU
In 1877 Burbidge, a western naturalist and botanist visited the Istana of HRH Sultan Mohammad Jamalul Alam or Azam and sketched the carvings at the top of the door of the Sultan's palace.
He described it as two crocodiles holding a circle with an inscription in arabic letters on it.
According to an important scholars,Dr. Abdul Karim Hedjazi:"... these are not crocodiles because the crocodiles do not have fish tail; they are dolphins with a beaklike snout... ."
According to Dr. Hedjazi the dolphin is a symbol for Sulu like the dragon is a symbol of the Chinese Empire
.When the son of Sultan Badaruddin I visits China brought back the idea of a royal symbol and changed the dragons with two dolphins holdings a circle with the inscription on it, who maybe represents the seal of the Sultan Mohammad Jamalul Alam.
In reality we think that this animal is not a dolphin but a "Kurits ".
The tradition of the peoples of Sulu and Mindanao tells us that the Kurits was a monster who has the form of a crocodile and whose skin is so tough that no kris can penetrate it. Kurits, like the Phoenix, has the power of rising from the residue of its own destruction, the Mindanao version providing for the rebirth of Kurits from the pool of its own death-blood.
The Kurits have a fantastic and mythological origin that's why anatomically kurits doesn't have all the natural characteristics of real crocodile.
